A Founder’s Dream: Urban Farming and the SM Foundation

Based on a vision put forward by founder Henry Sy, Sr., and a program that began in earnest in 2007; SM Foundation mounted simultaneous Urban Farming initiatives last July 7, at the SM City North Edsa Annex and 16 other SM malls. It was a wonderful way to highlight its progress over the years and to celebrate the vision with the strategic government agencies and LGUs that have been such valuable partners over the 16 years.

SM City North Edsa

This Urban Farming initiative is led by the SM Foundation through its Kabalikat Sa Kabuhayan on Sustainable Agriculture Program (KSK-SAP). It’s about uplifting the farmer community, fostering environmental consciousness, food security, and creating livelihood and income opportunities for marginalized urban communities. Through the KSK-SAP, a comprehensive program of urban farming techniques, product development, marketing, and basic accounting are offered in strategically-located field schools.

SM City Roxas

The KSK program has successfully conducted over 260 sustainable agricultural trainings, benefiting a total of 28,550 farmers. These trainings have taken place in both rural and urban settings, where participants have been exposed to sustainable farming modules that promote the cultivation of nutritious, high-quality vegetables and fruits.

SM City Clark

Partnering with the SM Foundation, SM Supermalls, and SM Markets are the following government agencies; the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Tourism, and the Quezon City Government. Each government organization and LGU plays a vital role in maintaining the viability of the program, and so that no stone is left unturned in ensuring its success.

As an example, the SM Foundation has brought SM Supermalls and SM Markets into the picture so that as these urban farmers successfully harvest, they’re given an opportunity to market and sell their produce at the Sunday Markets that are now being held in several malls across the nation. When the produce reaches a volume that goes beyond this Sunday marketing mechanism, the SM Markets offer other alternatives.

SM City Naga

It’s about creating integration and circularity so that a mini-economic ecosystem is realized. After all, it can’t be about teaching them what and how to farm and then leaving them with no outlet with which to monetize this harvest. The SM Foundation creates these strategic partnerships so that true income opportunities become part of the overall scenario.

SM City Cabanatuan

Who would have thought that this vision of Henry Sy, Sr., back in 2007, would have been so uncanny in predicting the mounting problems and issues we face today in agriculture, sustainable food production, food security, and urban development? It’s a vision and dream that those in the SM Foundation are very proud to carry on, and deliver.

SM is in the business of creating a sustainable environment. From being the first to consider renewable energy in mall buildings, to implementing energy-saving devices, we continue to meet significant sustainability milestones.

SM Supermalls, Mesa ni Misis team up for the healthiest SuperMoms Meetup

Just in time for Nutrition Month, SM Supermalls partnered with Mesa ni Misis to celebrate the healthiest SuperMoms Meetup at the SM Megamall Event Atrium on July 22, Saturday.

SuperMoms gathered once again for the biggest and grandest super momma convention, which also marked the launch of Juana’s Table, the newest recipe book by Mesa ni Misis’ Juana Manahan Yupangco.

“We SuperMoms hold the power to shape the future of our children’s health. By embracing a plant-based diet and introducing it to our families, we can ensure that our little ones grow up strong, vibrant, and armed with the necessary tools to lead a healthy and fulfilled life.” said Grace Magno, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Marketing.

SM Supermalls and Mesa ni Misis, through the recipe book, aimed to educate moms on the importance of healthy and sustainable eating. Written by Yupangco herself, who is a food security champion and advocate for local produce and farmers, the book is filled with healthy and affordable meal options that moms can easily create in their kitchen using the freshest produce found at the SM Sunday Market.

During the event, participants were treated to a cooking demo by Yupangco, who was then joined by celebrities and certified SuperMoms, Dimples Romana and Patti Grandidge Herrera who whipped up a veggie gimbap using fresh, local ingredients. They showcased how easily one can create a delicious and healthy meal for the whole family using one of the many recipes found in the book. Also, moms got the chance to discover how to practice sustainability in the household through cooking.

The meetup featured on-ground activities for moms such as the SuperMoms Club Photo wall where SuperMoms got to take photos with their goodie bags and a raffle draw where lucky SuperMoms won special prizes and other awesome surprises from partners and sponsors.

Started in 2018, SM Supermalls’ SuperMoms Club is the Philippines’ largest mommy community on Facebook. Its on-ground event, the SuperMoms Meetup, has become an avenue to further build a stronger community of inspiring women and super mommas who uplift, support, and encourage each other.

“This meetup was designed with your well-being in mind. We want to make you feel valued and cared for, and at the same time, we want to give you a voice to be heard at home, in the workplace, and in your community. Your SM Supermalls family will always be here for you, listening to you and understanding your needs and helping you throughout your motherhood journey,” said Juana Manahan Yupangco.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SWEDISH SNUS

Snus originated from Sweden in the early 18th century.

This moist powder smokeless product originating from a variant of dry snuff is consumed by placing inside the lip, in between the lip and gums; for extended periods. Snus does not typically result in the need for spitting. Although used similarly to American dipping tobacco, snus is not fermented but is steam-pasteurized.
Local varieties of snus, growing in popularity in the United States, are used as an alternative to smoking, vaping, e-smoking, chewing, dipping, dissolvable and snuff tobacco. However, US-manufactured snus typically uses significant amounts of sweeteners. It does not have the same production standards or ingredients as the Swedish snus.
Snuff, the precursor of snus or moist snuff, was introduced to France by French diplomat Jean Nicot in the the 16th century. Nicot recommended snuff to Catherine de’ Medici, an Italian noblewoman and a queen consort of King Henry II of France; as a migraine remedy. Since then, she became a regular user of snuff and it became a fashion among the court and upper-class citizens of France, especially among females. It was deemed more socially acceptable than other forms of tobacco.
In the 18th century, Swedish producers began to manufacture moist snuff, which became known as snus. Ettan, which means “the number one” is the oldest brand of snus still sold in the market today. It was registered in 1822.
Nowadays, Swedish snus are very popular among smokers who wish to quit smoking. It is used even in Nicotine Replacement Therapy which is a medically-approved way to take nicotine by means other than tobacco. NRT has been proven to increase the chance of quitting smoking or stopping chewing tobacco by about 55%.
Currently, there are more than 10 popular brands of Swedish snus in the American and European markets. Each brand comes in different packaging and features different flavors and strengths.

Sarmiento offers solution to EDSA traffic

House Transportation Committee Chair and Samar 1st District Representative Edgar Mary Sarmiento unveiled Friday the blueprint of his proposed centralized and synchronized bus dispatch system which would turn the EDSA’s rowdy and chaotic city buses into a fast, efficient and predictable mass transport system.

Sarmiento, a civil engineer, disclosed the full details of his proposal after announcing that his panel is closely working with the Department of Transportation (DoTr) to craft a roadmap which would solve EDSA’s traffic problem.

In his proposal, Sarmiento said that the innermost lane of EDSA will serve as an “express bus lane” which can be accessed through stations used by the MRT. Like a carousel, the “express bus lane” will just circle around EDSA, duplicating the route of the MRT.

“People who use the MRT can now have the option to ride the bus which will be also operated like carousel. The buses will only load and unload passengers in a synchronized manner at the MRT stations so they are basically an extension of the MRT. Walang magiging traffic dyan because the entire inner lane from Taft Avenue to North Avenue and vice-versa will be enclosed and exclusive to the express bus lane ,” Sarmiento said.
Sarmiento said that the three lanes in the middle of EDSA will be dedicated for all types of private vehicles subject to the existing vehicle reduction programs like the number coding scheme. Private cars will be only allowed to use the outer lane when turning into an intersection.

The outer lane of EDSA or the yellow lane will be used as a dedicated city bus lane which will also adopt a centralized and synchronized dispatch system. Dedicated bus stops will be established one kilometer apart. Loading and unloading of passengers will be strictly implemented on these bus stops.
Sarmiento said that while the express bus lane will cater to passengers who also use the MRT, the city bus lane operation will extend up to the Parañaque Integrated Bus Terminal (PITX) in the south and the Valenzuela Integrated Bus Terminal (VIBT) in the north and vice-versa.

” City buses will now be using the outermost lane in EDSA or the yellow lane. They will be traversing EDSA in a carousel-type system until they reach the proposed north terminal which is the Valenzuela Integrated Bus Terminal. From there, the city buses will now traverse to the south still using the outermost lane until it reaches the proposed south terminal which is the Paranaque Integrated Bus Terminal,” Sarmiento said.

“We propose this to eradicate the kanya-kanya system of the buses wherein they compete with each other creating chaos through overtaking, overspeeding, and overstaying. Puno man o hindi, lalarga po ang mga city buses dahil may schedule na po ang biyahe nila at hindi na sila makikipag-agawan ng pasahero dahil hindi na commission-based ang kita kundi sahod na ang matatanggap ng mga drivers at konduktors,” Sarmiento added.
Sarmiento said that also part of the proposal is to modernize the fare system using tap or beep card.

“Once everything has been set in theory and generated through computer by the MMDA, it will be presented to the public through a dry run, which will be implemented on a day with the least number of vehicles in the road. We are going to have a computer-generated simulation of this proposal to be led by the MMDA,” Sarmiento said to dispel fears that this could end up just like the other failed “experiments” of the MMDA.
Sarmiento clarified however that his proposal can still be subject to improvements and adjustments by the DoTr and the MMDA which is will the frontline implementing agencies.

“Lastly, this proposal is a work in progress. Details will be discussed by the Executives. Ang inyong lingkod, bilang Chairman ng House Committee on Transportation ay willing na magbigay ng suporta sa DOTr kung may mga kailangang polisiya upang maipatupad natin kaagad ang mga planong ito,” Sarmiento said.

Sarmiento said that if and when the plan is set into motion, the private vehicles that continue to clog EDSA middle lanes would be reduced eventually “because people would now start riding the bus rather than drive their car in what is described as one of the world’s biggest parking lot.”

“With this system, if the trains and buses will be fully operational, and the commuting public is now effectively and efficiently being moved, that’s the time that we can reduce the volume of private vehicles in EDSA and the major thoroughfares in Metro Manila,” Sarmiento said.
” Once the volume of vehicles were reduced, that’s the time that we can introduce major infrastructures in EDSA and other major thoroughfares,” he added. END

Elevates Photography and User Experience With OPPO F11 Pro

Shine in the dark through brilliant portraits with the OPPO’s new F Series smartphone

In a gathering filled with brilliance and breakthroughs, OPPO officially launched the new F11 and F11 Pro on March 27 in a star-studded event at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Successfully establishing the F series as the Selfie Expert, the F11 series showcases the upgrade from selfies to brilliant portraits by featuring a 48MP image sensor. This innovation will provide users with an unprecedented night photography experience. Software and hardware upgrades combine to improve battery life, gaming performance, and user experience. In addition, the F11 Pro boasts an uninterrupted full screen display made possible by a hidden front camera module.

Shining alongside the F11 Pro are the official ambassadors of the F11 Series: Issa Pressman, Laureen Uy, Marga Bermudez, Rosenthal Tee, Luke Landrigan, and Magic Liwanag. Selected with utmost criteria, these individuals’ unique stories embody what the F11 Series stands for: the ability to shine in the dark, no matter the circumstance.

“With every launch, OPPO ensures that we put to heart the needs of our Filipino market. Every innovation is made to uplift the consumer experience and that is what we have made with the F11 Series. Through the shift in focus from selfie expert to brilliant portraits, we provide our users the opportunity to shine in the dark, to tell their untold stories through stunning portraits, and ultimately inspire others. That is what OPPO is all about,” shared Jane Wan, Vice President of Marketing for OPPO Philippines.

The guests were given an exclusive opportunity to experience the F11 Pro and all its powerful features in the experiential area.

From Selfie Expert to Brilliant Portrait
OPPO has worked for years to advance the field of selfie photography, and through the F11 series has taken the next step to propel users to capturing brilliant portraits. The F11 series is equipped with a 48 MP image sensor and F1.79 large aperture together with a 6P lens, the camera can sense more light when shooting in low light conditions, ensuring more details are captured. When capturing a night portrait, the included Tetracell technology analyzes and combines data from four adjacent pixels to achieve the equivalent of a single 1.6μm pixel. Twice the number of photosensitive pixels improves light sensitivity and allows users to capture clearer night portraits.

The F11 series also employs Ultra Night Mode and Dazzle Color Mode technologies. These technologies leverage AI and multi-frame noise reduction to achieve less noise, handheld stabilization, highlight suppression, and enhanced dynamic range. These all combine to enable users to capture levels of brightness and detail that normally exceed the limits of the human eye. When capturing a night portrait, the F11 series automatically distinguishes between a human face and the background, ensuring the human is the focus of the scene.

The F11 series not only captures excellent portraits with its rear camera, but also continues the “Selfie Expert” tradition of the F-series. Selfies taken with the F11 series are as natural and beautiful as ever.

A New Design Experience: From Trend to Art
OPPO advocates an aesthetic of “natural creation” and has captured the beauty of nature in the F11 Pro via breakthroughs in both materials and workmanship. OPPO is also the first smartphone manufacturer to create the first triple-color gradient design, Thunder Black. This unique design blends red and blue into classic black, akin to a meteor streaking across the night sky. OPPO also created a unique double-color gradient design, Aurora Green, which draws inspiration from vibrant blue oceans interwoven with lush green continents.

The F11 Pro comes equipped with a 6.5-inch full HD+ screen, featuring an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a screen-to-body ratio of 90.9%. In particular, the F11 Pro features a hidden front camera module to free up space for its full screen display. The motor on the front camera modules has been thoroughly tested to ensure it can operate 100 times usage per day for 6 years without fail, thus ensuring a positive user experience.

The F11 series features a much more elaborate design, retaining the experience-optimized crescent design from the previous generation, but also adding a transparent, amber-colored hidden camera module. When the camera rises up, users are treated to a stunning visual experience.

All around Powerhouse with VOOC 3.0 and Hyper Boost Technology
The F11 series also succeeds in upgrading the overall user experience.

First, the F11 series comes equipped with a 4,000mAh battery which is 500 mAh higher than the previous F series smartphone. The brand new VOOC 3.0 flash charging technology is further improved to shorten charging time by 20 minutes. This means the F11 series can be charged within 80 minutes. Now, VOOC has over 90,000,000 users around the world.

The F11 series also reduces power consumption through optimized hardware and software technology. The F11 series contains a low-power MTK P70 CPU and ram-equipped display. Through this, the F11 series achieves a longer battery life via faster charging technology, a larger-capacity battery, and lower power consumption.

With regards to gaming, OPPO has independently developed its own performance acceleration engine called Hyper Boost, optimized for 11 popular mobile games, including PUBG and AOV. By optimizing the system resource mobilization plan, hardware resources can be utilized more effectively, resulting in faster game response, no disconnections, and no dropped frames. Meanwhile, OPPO has introduced two useful tools — Game Space and Game Assistant, providing gamers with a more immersive gaming experience.

The OPPO F11 Pro is also equipped with the new ColorOS 6 system, specially designed for full-screen smartphones. The innovative borderless design further increases ease of use. In addition, ColorOS 6 has multiple functions, including OPPO Cloud Service, Smart Assistant, and Gesture Navigation, allowing users to experience a smarter lifestyle.

Pre-order your own OPPO F11 Pro!
